Can you hear me? Impacts of underwater noise on communication space of adult, sub-adult and calf contact calls of endangered St. Lawrence belugas (Delphinapterus leucas)

چکیده
Noise and anthropogenic disturbances from vessel traffic are an important threat to the recovery of endangered St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) beluga population. The consequences acoustic masking could be particularly adverse in case critical vocalizations that maintain contact between mothers their dependent but mobile calves. This study models communication range adults, sub-adults newborn calls presence absence vessels summering area for this Ambient noise measurements, a composite audiogram apparent source levels adult/sub-adult calls, informed model. Apparent were estimated received produced by four individuals carrying digital tags SLE, Canada, recorded two adults calf at aquarium, known distances calibrated hydrophone. median ranges over 18 times larger SLE adult sub-adult than with 57 53% reduction noise, respectively. For results 170 m noise. These first estimates function suggest quiet newborns impair mother–calf contact.

متن کاملAllonursing in captive belugas (Delphinapterus leucas).
This study describes allonursing (females nursing offspring that are not their own) in captive belugas (Delphinapterus leucas). In addition to the calf's mother, two females that were not pregnant or nursing at the time of the calf's birth spontaneously lactated and nursed the male calf intermittently throughout 34 months of his life at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center. These observ...

Auditory communication is central to the social interactions of many animals. In fruit flies, males sing to court females. Coen et al. (2016) demonstrate that males can dynamically adjust the loudness of their songs according to the distance to a female.
متن کاملPossible mechanisms of action of environmental contaminants on St. Lawrence beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas).
A small isolated population of beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) that are highly contaminated by pollutants, mostly of industrial origin, resides in the St. Lawrence estuary, Québec, Canada. Overhunting in the first half of the century was the probable cause for this population to dwindle from several thousand animals to the current estimate of 500. The failure of the population to recover ...
متن کاملStatus of Beluga (delphinapterus Leucas) in the St. Lawrence River Estuary
The St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) beluga are listed as threatened under the Species at Risk Act; a Recovery Strategy is defined, and their summer Critical Habitat has been identified. A review of the SLE beluga status (2007) concluded that the population was stable over the period 1988-2006. However, in recent years there has been an increase in reports of death of young-of-the-year, and an appare...
